INTRODUCTION TO JOURNALISM AND PRINT MEDIA

"Check your qualification. Find out what courses you should take in school. If you don’t like to write, you won’t be happy in journalism. If you do like it, practice writing as much as you can. Your school newspaper and your English and social sciences courses are your first assignments for success."—Arthur P Twogood in "Your Life Work Series: Journalism"

As any men would say, it does not matter how old is a treasure for still it is a treasure. This video seems to come from the time of my grandmother, who was also a writer in The Manila Times, but still it shows a lot of awakening thoughts a young journalist, like me, should know about journalism. Now, I know that my life nowadays as a campus journalist is just a path that might even lead to the loftiest heights in our society. Another point is that no matter what the position a person has in journalism, he/she still has the right to be respected because he/she works so hard to make sure that the events around us are known.

The video shows that a newspaper worker must be good enough to collect and discover interesting stories and must have the perseverance and dedication in writing a story because it reflects on the person if he/she is a good interviewer and reporter. The video clip really demonstrates the qualities of a good newspaper worker, how the newspaper is printed, where the newspaper came from and how the newspaper publishing place is divided into different sections where different people are working.

Anonymous said...

Journalism and Print Media requires a lot of hard work and patience for it undergoes a series of process before the final output. As each section also requires a specialist in order for each article to be perfect on the whole, the paper should come out very organized. Journalism may be quite hard to tackle but it seems so interesting.

The video clip, for me, is exactly like what you said earlier in our class. they were showing something so simple, yet they depicted it in such a good way.

It’s true that you can’t achieve something if won’t learn to love it. This movie clip has given me the chance to see behind the thin pages of the newspaper. From how it’s assiduously thought and meticulously edited to its tough printing yet remarkable finished product. It made me appreciate the bundle of paper in the morning my mom usually reads.

This movie clip made me realize that it takes a lot of effort and perseverance in order to come up with paper works that are really worth one’s time. Through this, I learned to be grateful for things that I usually take for granted. From now on, I will learn to appreciate and value everything no matter how simple or great it is.

The movie clip emphasized the hardwork and perspiration that it takes for a piece of media to be brought to life. It made me give more appreciation to journalism and print media. One should really bear in mind the beads of sweat that lies hidden behind each line.

The clip was very informative. It gave me inspiration in viewing your other posts.

This movie clip showed to me how important my decision is in thinking journalism and print media. For it shows the life behind the published paper made by those people who put together their best to create a productive output, making me realize its woth working for.

This video is already old, but it is a must watch for the young aspiring journalists of our time, just like me, so that there would be no more confusion regarding our tasks if ever we are to enter the Makati Science Vision or work as a future journalist. This is such a video that will serve as my guide all my life.

This video stunned me. I never expected such an old movie clip to be so informative yet entertaining. It gave me a different
perception of what I used to think of journalism. This film instilled upon me the hardships journalists experience only to pursue the task set before them - with an underlying passion for their job. This is a truly must-see movie.

I found this clip an interesting one. It showed not only the old way of film making, but also how a newspaper is published and well worked for. It has led me to realize how much effort is put into even just one day's paper.

This video serves as a framework of what we have today in field of Journalism. Writing articles requires patience and determination to come up with an interesting one. Love your work so that you can be successful in the course you have chosen.

Although I understand that this video was probably created way before I was even born, I can't help but think if present newspaper companies still use the same equipment as featured in said video. I never even knew such equipment actually existed back then! How much hard work must have been done by reporters, writers, publishers, and the "type-casters"! It really struck me hard how much people value their community so much that they would even go through a blizzard to get the scoop! It really is amazing how much work, love, and dedication is put into every newspaper.

"An old video gets a golden bit". This video is really and definitely old...older than my pants?, older than my grandparents?I don't know?. but for the fact that it has a lot of important points regarding journalism being old doesn't matter. This video made me realize how much effort and dedication journalists give just to get the sympathy of the people. They would do every little thing to make their story fruitful and presentable. Being a journalist is like giving your heart and your mind to your work. The key things that were given would really help me a lot as beginner. This is so informative and helpful.

It's amazing how old newspapers were made!.Journalists must have patient in order to make an interesting and factual article. That is one lesson that I have learned from this video. Now I have an idea on how to make a very good article. This video helps a lot.Watching this video is a good oppurtunity to learn and appreciate the essence of Journalism.

Anonymous said...

Classical. And really informative. These are two of the words to describe what i've seen in the clip. It's so fascinating how patient then-journalists were. It was really inspiring.

It amazed me how Journalism isn't just about writing news, but experiencing it, on the scene. A lot of effort was really put into making newspapers - it had various sections and everyone has their own specialization. Also, I was surprised to find out that some journalists don't really write the news, they just phone the information to the news office and another writer works on the article. Awesome stuff! :)

After watching the video, I smiled remembering all the effort the whole team of The Makati Science Vision has exerted to produce only the best school paper. To be a part of it made me really proud because I knew that we worked hard together. It was an old movie and I really appreciated it because I saw that even then, journalists really put much effort to give accurate news to the people. It made me appreciate what I already love doing more.

Like the video showed, newspapers are tediously made. Reporters usually have the toughest yet most rewarding job. And reporters are sent throughout the city. Knowing how to write an article people would read is a very important skill that is needed in this field

Anonymous said...

After watching this video, I am really amazed at how hard-working, patient, and systematic journalists are. Each of them are specialists in their own fields. They show excellent teamwork to give the most accurate and up-to-date information to the public. And despite all the long hard work days, and tiring long nights, they love what they do..

Also... Although this video was obviously made a really long time ago, I think that journalism hasn't changed much after all those years.

Mark Tristan Angelo Morena Cabatac said...

It is, really a lot of work. I can't imagine, how these people are able to work those gathering of information, writing stories, publishing newspapers, etc., in just a day!Well, after watching this video clip, I learned that they really have patience, perseverance, determination, hard work, and most of all, they love doing it. This is a good opportunity for us students who are taking Journalism. And last, I am really amazed for these people, doing a multi task job a day.

Indeed, Journalism takes a lot of passion and hard work. I was amazed with all of the facts that I learned concerning Journalism, and to tell you, it was really great and educational. In this moment, the respect that I have for journalist and writers got even bigger. The world of Journalism and Print media is really interesting, even my words are limited for you to understand.

I admire things of the past so much. This video presents the early ways of journalism. It truly shows the hearts beyond the thin pages of a newspaper. One can see how dedicated and whole-hearted they were during those times. The efforts of the journalists of the past really shows how willing they are to commit themselves to such arduous tasks in order to print their work. Everything I saw in the clip really made me think about journalists in this time, in this era. It also made me think about how I could have such love and dedication for writing.

I think the need of people to express every emotion and insight is one of the reasons why we have so many literary works nowadays. This video showed me every drop of blood, sweat, and even tears as those writers are going over their works. It just amazed me that in any way of communication, you will be heard and everybody will listen. Journalism and Print Media inspired me more to continue with what I planned to start doing: To be a part of the Makati Science High School Vision. Not only for the fact that my name will be on the paper; but for the reality that I can touch other people's lives through the simple words, phrases, and passages I am writing down on my Cattleya notebook when I just feel to scribble my pen on those smooth papers.

Anonymous said...

Wow. *AMAZED*. That's a lot of work. This video is a must watch. Journalism is not just journalism, it requires patience and determination. I can't believe that they are doing it everyday. This really is a great help to us future journalists.

Anonymous said...

Here I was, thinking that us Makati Science High School students have it hard. And then, this came along.

I've only realized now how much it takes to actually be a journalist. It takes perseverance, hard work, and of course, more than a few gallons of patience.

This video may have been made a long time ago, but does that really matter? It just shows that even then, journalists already worked hard for what they want to achieve.

Anonymous said...

I realized that journalism is not an easy work. But if you are interested in this special field, heavy work is not an excuse.Hard work, patience and skills are the things you'll surely need to become a successful journalist someday.

This video is truly amazing. It gives us a detailed background on how a newspaper company works. Also, it gives an overview of each specialty in the newspaper company and how each specialty is important in the process of making one newspaper alone. It tells us how heavy the responsibility of being in the world of journalsim is and at the same time, how fulfilling it is to see your work published and distributed to different places.

Of the many different writers we have, I realized that journalists outshine the rest of them. From getting the stories to publishing them, it takes mastery of their fields of choice and skills to have a substantial output. I admired their never-fading efforts to publish everyday stories. Also, the collaboration of each member is surprisingly complicated.

Even though the video showed how hectic it can be, I still am encouraged to take journalism someday. It gave me a better perception on how journalism showcases the beauty of stories polished by skills of hardworking individuals.

Anonymous said...

Amazing! That is the only word that came out of my mouth after I watched this video. I never knew that making newspapers would be so difficult back then. I was not shocked about the equipment though, since I accidentally read a book in the library regarding instruments used for printing. But, they were still awkward-looking, compared to our modern equipment.

I think newspapers back then were better. Why? I think it is because of typewriters, since it would be harder to think of the right words to type. They didn't have "backspace" back then, or an automatic spell-checker or a built-in thesaurus. That is why it is harder to work for good quality paper.

Anonymous said...

The video may be in black and white, but there was no colorless second when I watched it. It showed the real meaning of journalism. Being a journalist may be a very difficult job, but I know that at the end of the day, a journalist always goes home smiling, regardless of all the hardships that he/she has experienced while working.

peachsundress said...

This video tells us that being a journalist is not that simple. They put their minds and efforts into their work. A newspaper is not just an ordinary paper with news in it, it helps us to understand what is happening in our surrounding.

Involving oneself in the field of journalism requires a lot of strength, patience, perseverance, and passion. Difficult, tedious and challenging tasks are assigned to journalists, as shown in the video. Thus, journalists are undeniably subjected to pressure. However, anyone who is determined to pursue a career in journalism must not fear for it is all about having a sense of responsibility and dedication to his/her work.

The clip is interesting and it inspires me to be a hardworking student in journalism. The video shows that people before were very hardworking in terms of journalism

The people who work in newspapers obviously have a lot of patience and determination. Now I know that it isn't easy being a pressman. This video helped to stop taking things for granted and appreciate the simple things.

Wow! This movie clip was really a big WOW. I really learned a lot. I realized that a newspaper is not an easy work especially for those people behind it. At first, I wonder how they can give or present such a prestigious and very informative newspaper every morning. Now I realized that it is just because they really work hard for it and they really love what they are doing. Just like one of my friends who sometimes stay at school for a night just to give us such an excellent school paper.

Anonymous said...

Let's keep it simple. Wow. I'm such a happy-go-lucky person that I didn't realize how hard life really is. Especially lives of journalists. And here I was dreaming of becoming one. If only it were that easy, well easier now because of all the new technologies available. With all those departments and processes that it needs to undergo. But I wasn’t afraid. I was motivated. All the more that I should continue. Good luck to us! And praise for all journalists.

I found this movie clip interesting. This only shows that being a journalist is really not that easy. It also shows how a newspaper was being done. Now I know that publishing a newspaper really needs a lot of hardwork and passion.

I find this video very old yet very informative. When I see journalist or other people related in this kind of job, I thought they are living life in a comfy way like all the glossy magazines show/say with all the fame and fortune they get from their line of work. But now, I have come to realize that journalism is not really a piece of cake instead it is a home of hardships and priceless efforts.

Anonymous said...

This video truly shows the greatness of people behind all the newspapers that we are reading. Whether the newspaper that you've read was from yesterday or even from last year, it all still came from the priceless efforts of the journalists.

Anonymous said...

Dedication, hard-work and patience are the key things you need to be a journalist. Like our professor in Journalism and Print Media said, journalism can be learned. A person just has to have a willingness to learn it.

Anonymous said...

This video was definitely made before my parents were born. Yet it contained a very informative overview of the fundamentals of journalism. The only problem is that the processes involved in newspaper making nowadays are different from those of the past.

Anonymous said...

Wow! It must really be a lot of work to make even just one newspaper. I admire how writers and editors put the 26 letters of the alphabet together into headlines and the entire newspaper itself, so that we can read what's going on in our country accurately and fresh. Because of this video, I learned to appreciate more the value of an 18-peso-newspaper.

The video clip made me realize that newspapers are worthy of being read. Before, I just read the news articles that suit my interests. Now, I learned that before a news article is made, journalists and news writers give all their efforts just to give the people the information that they need. This video clip brought out my interest in reading newspapers.

The video was very informative. It gave me a glimpse of how newspapers, magazines, and our school paper, The Makati Science Vision, are made. It made me salute to all of the journalists because I know that they give their very best to bring us the most comprehensive and interesting facts and news stories. They are really worthy to be respected.

I found the video very inspiring. It encouraged me a lot for I saw how journalists experienced hardships as they work. It seemed that I finally saw my focal point that I can now start working with dilligence and determination. I may also say that I chose the right path because I found out how important is the role that journalismplays in the society.

This video clip showed the hard work and the efforts of the journalists. And as a journalism student, we should be as hard working as they are in order to achieve what we want and that is, to improve our writing skills. The clip made me more interested about the course. In fact, I thought that the speaker in the video sounded just like our journalism teacher.

This video shows how journalists work everyday and the importance of journalism. As others said, it is relly a big WOW. Journalism requires a lot of patience, perseverance, determination and hard work. Now, I know how great this journalism is and, how hard those thin newspapers are.

People of the old times had a lot of hard work and dedication in making just one simple daily newspaper. It takes your own physical and mental strength. I was really astonished at how they worked so vigorously back then because nowadays, people behind newspapers rely on technology like computers, cameras and the like. The video made me realize that journalism requires a lot of dedication and perspiration. It is fun but it comes with a big responsibility to inform.

I am not reading newspaper that much. Maybe that is why I am a little bit shocked when I watched this video clip. I know that every thing requires hardwork, but I did not expect making newspaper will cost that much. Journalism and Print Media really requires patience and perseverance in order to create an interesting and reliable newspaper. And as an example of an interesting one is our Makati Science High School Vision. It is the only newspaper I am interested with. Maybe because my name is written there. Haha. Now I understand why some are addicted to newspaper.

Anonymous said...

This was amazing! It had a great impact on me. Just browsing through these papers is a simple way of appreciating their work. A journalist's work has never been easy. The part where the journalist has to cover a news about a fire is what I loved the most in the video. It showed that you have to put all your courage and confidence to do that assigned task. The video showed us how to make a newspaper in an old-fashioned way and those machines were unbelievably old. In every page of the paper, you could see the hard work, dedication and the love for their work.

Anonymous said...

Publishing a paper would be impossible if one doesn't have determination. Sweat and hard work were required before words were joined to make sentences to make paragraphs to make articles. It sure is tiring but I'm sure that it's all worth it. Bravo to the journalists!

The English alphabet is made up of 26 letters. Words, phrases, clauses and sentences will not be made possible if this set of letters is not around. We can compare the development of letters to journalism. Journalism is a form of writing where we enjoy and share our talents. Journalism, like the development of letters, starts from the simplest to the most complex. Like letters, journalism should start from practicing in our usual and common subjects in school. From here, we’ll develop our love in writing and we’ll be able to succeed just like Arthur P. Twogood said in the short film. Newspaper printing or print media, for me, can be best compared to a human body system. A print media company will not work if one’s presence is not around. It is like the human body system that works together. From the newsroom, which is the heart of a company, happens most of the important activities in print media. A print media won’t be successful if managing editors, reporters, outside men, rewrite men, copy readers, make-up editor, political writer, picture writer, columnist, editorial writer, country editor, city editor and other employee prior to the publisher is not around.

I thought making newspapers was a no sweat job but this clip proved me wrong. The quotation, “The trouble with simple living is that, though it can be joyful, rich, and creative, it isn't simple,” is an evident proof. We think that life is so simple but is not just like what I thought of journalism. It undergoes a very tedious tasks before a newspaper can be published and be able to reach the hand of its readers. Journalism requires persistent hands working together to be able to accomplish a superb paperwork. It starts from the smallest detail called words. It’s amazing how billions of words we know were developed and derived from merely 26 letters, quite impossible huh? Without these 26 letters, we won’t be able to grab in our hands something to read and journalism won’t be possible.

Anonymous said...

Even though this video was obviously made a long time ago, i guess, it is still an effective tool for me to understand more about journalism and print media. It is indeed a process and takes a real time, effort and writers. In addition to that, it is more sophisticated and challenging as I thought it is. You cannot write unless you have the capacity and the knowledge. A good source of news and information hence must be delivered with honesty and integrity. Journalism and print media continue through time and still developing, I'm glad I had the chance to experience and witness it as a whole.

I Like the last message... if you are not a good writer don't choose journalism because you are not going to be happy. But if you're good, just improve your skills... and join.

I fully agree with this! Unless we love what we are doing we don't enjoy the work.We should completely be immersed int he task we are doing1
