The following are the different meanings attached to a rose by any other color or number.


COLOR

Red roses mean “I love you,” and they are the undisputed symbol of burning passion and romantic affection.

White roses represent purity, respect, and innocence, and they are the best options for fathers who want to give something to their daughters.

Yellow roses mean remember me, welcome back, and congratulations, and they represent new beginnings and good friendships. However, yellow roses also represent jealousy.

Lilac or lavender roses speak of love at first sight.

Orange roses symbolize desire, fascination, and enthusiasm, and they mean “I would like to get to know you better.”

Pink and peach roses mean “Thank you.”

Blue roses are for secret admirers.


NUMBER

One red rose means “I still love you” or love at first sight, while one rose in any color means “Thank you.”

Two roses mean “The feeling is mutual.”

Three roses mean “I love you.”

Seven roses mean “I’m infatuated with you.”

According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer and the Discovery Weekend Program, the following are the tips on how to stay in love

1. Have a shared spirituality.

2. Be each other’s best friend.

3. Weekly dates are a must. Find time to be together.

4. Focus on feelings, not on issues and judgments, because feelings are neither right nor wrong.

5. Be affectionate and affirm each other daily. Embrace, kiss often, hold hands, and flirt with each other.

6. If married, have your own home, no matter how small. No parents, no in-laws, no siblings, and no relatives.

7. Never involve other people, especially friends and family, in a quarrel. Instead, see a counselor or someone who can “referee” for the two of you.

One of the Seven Best School Papers in the Philippines

Stories told. Lessons taught. Glory celebrated.

This is what The Makati Science Vision, the official student publication of the Makati Science High School, has done for its past 11 years of serving the academic community under a culture of excellence in the growing craft of campus journalism.

True to its undying anthem, The Makati Science Vision has indeed touched the lives of its readers through heartfelt stories of absolute love and annihilating hate, of true friendship and desolating enmity, of hard-won victory and life-changing loss, of burning passion and exulting splendor.

Its 20 pages of touching stories and commentaries give meaning to man’s living: man as God’s creation, man as his own master, man as part of a nation, and man as inhabitant of the world.

The news section relives the events that helped mould what the Makati Science and its students are now. It tells what happened, what is happening, and what will happen in and around the campus, as it believes that factual information is the key to success and that factual information can only be obtained through truthful, accurate, balanced, and objective reporting. It also provides data for readers regarding the heated debate on the influence of the mass media on the youth through its Fourth year studes watch too much TV, survey says.

The opinion section voices out the unfathomable depths of the human heart, mind, and soul. If the news section tells what it sees, the opinion section tells what it thinks about what it sees. The outrage caused by different occurrences in the country, such as the inexplicable death of a 12-year-old girl who was believed to have committed suicide out of poverty and the degrading and disgraceful circus acts of politicians in the political jungle, are being commented on—either justified or criticized—based on the authors’ point of views.

The features section endorses the many facets of living. It portrays the vibrant colors of life as a Filipino through the comparison of two museums—one antiquated and one contemporary—in Museum Hopping and through the citation of icons that distinguishes a Filipino from the rest of the world through Heritage: 101 Filipino Icons.

It also attributes man’s morality and spirituality through Acts of Random Kindness: A Movie Review of Tom Shadyac’s Evan Almighty. However, it encourages the readers to face society's reality in A Dangerous Flower in A World of Shame and Greediness. Moreover, it emphasizes man’s place in the modern world as a steward of God’s creations through One World, One Promise and as a promoter of truth and technology in Blog, Blogger, Blogging and From Xerex to De Quiros: A Discourse on the News Paper Industry in the Philippines.

The literary section brings out the hope living deep within the human soul through accounts of fortitude in times of grievance—be it losing a mother, a sister, a teacher, a friend, or someone whom you dearly loves. It tells that no matter what the loss is, there is still hope and one God who consoles the depressed because life would never be life if there is no death. It shows the glory and miracle amid a time of troubles and darkness.

The science and health section gives information on the role of science and technology in modern daily living. It also gives tips on how students should live healthy lifestyles. It also gave attention to the growing campaign against global warming.

The sports section exalts victories and defeats—the sweet victories that are worked on hardly and the bittersweet defeats that will serve as a stepping stone to triumph—through narratives of incidents in the field of sports. It tells how one should lead his life in His Own Captain, man as the master of himself to God. On the other hand, it also tells how environment can affect one’s performance in Cold Truth of Reality.

The Makati Science Vision is maka-Diyos, makapamilya, makatotohanan, makabayan, at makakalikasan.

Truly, The Makati Science Vision has lived its maxim. Stories to tell. Lessons to teach. Glory to celebrate.

Makati Science high school, Korea exchange visit OKD

The Makati Science High School and Kumsan High School, a private school in Jeonbuk, South Korea, has entered into a cooperative partnership that includes regular student and faculty exchange programs between the two schools.

Makati Science High School has been ranked number three among the top 100 schools in the country, and many of its students were chosen to visit Japan, Singapore, Thailand, and Korea as part of the student exchange program of the Department of Education.

Makati Mayor Jejomar C. Binay said he looks forward to a fruitful partnership with the Korean partners.

"I am happy because it again shows that the efforts of the city government in education have been recognized in other countries. This presents another opportunity for us to broaden the opportunities for our students,’’ he said.

DepEd-Makati superintendent Elena Ruiz said the exchange programs would cover educational, cultural, art and sciences, and technology development.

A memorandum of understanding was signed Wednesday by Binay, Pyo, Myung,- Jin, principal of Kumsan High School; Choi Sang-Seob, vice principal of Kumsan Junior High School; DepEd-Makati superintendent Ruiz; Roberto Anir, principal Makati Science High School and Engr. Aspillaga, first Vice Chairman of Makati Scout Council, who made the initial coordination regarding the cooperative undertaking.

Ruiz said the programs are expected to foster closer friendship, goodwill and understanding; further strengthen special ties through mutual cooperation; promote student/faculty exchange and instructional material development; and provide more opportunities for institutional and instructional growth.

Both parties also agreed to assist and to cooperate with each other in the planning and developing of the student and/or faculty exchange visits through a continuing exchange of information.

Makati Science project entry to be developed in Germany

Makati Science High School's project entry to the 3rd Asia-Europe Classroom (AEC) Conference has been endorsed as an AEC Project to be developed in Germany.

"The project, an online international collaborative learning scheme, was one of the seven selected out of 15 entries from different countries that were presented in Bogor, Indonesia, last year," said Elena Ruiz, superintendent of the Department of Education (DepEd) in Makati.

The project, entitled "Science Beyond the Classroom: A Tele- Collaborative Link Between the School and the Global Community," was initiated by Chona Maderal, a chemistry teacher from Makati Science.

Ms. Maderal, a teacher for 19 years and a product of the scholarship program of Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, warmly welcomed the endorsement.

This would enable her and her students to work with teacher facilitators and student members from Brunei, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Turkey and Finland to bridge the cultural differences among countries in Asia and Europe using information and communications technology (ICT) and science.

Ms. Maderal said the project also aims to address environmental concerns in the participating locales through activities planned and designed by the students.

Each school can compare its program with the other schools' so that it can adopt those that are successful and innovative, and vice versa.

The six other entries chosen were from Finland, Germany, Indonesia, Japan and Malaysia. Out of the seven projects that were voted to be developed, the AEC board and organizers will narrow the field to three official winners that will be announced during the conference in Germany this October.

The AEC was conceived by the Asia Europe Foundation to foster contacts among teachers and students of secondary and high schools in the two regions. The first phase of the AEC focuses on the establishment of a "cyber classroom" comprised of various online collaborative projects in order to facilitate cross-cultural exchanges and learning.

Makati public students off to Singapore to compete in the world robotics olympiad

The Makati Science High School together with two other schools won the right to represent the country and compete in the World Robotics Olympiad to be held in Singapore on November 5-8, 2004, Makati Mayor Jejomar C. Binay today announced.

Binay said joining Makati Science are the teams from Philippine Science-Main in Quezon City and Grace Christian High School in Caloocan. The three schools emerged as grand winners among the 10 school finalists that competed in the grand finals of the Philippine Robotics Olympiad held recently.

Other finalists included Philippine Science-Lanao, Philippine Science-Nueva Vizcaya, Claret High School, First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities, Philippine Women’s University, and Thomas Aquinas High School.

The team of Makati Science High School, composed of five students won “Best in Maze” event and emerged as the over-all champion in the regular category while placing fourth in the open category. On the other hand, the team of Philippine Science-Main won “Best in Wrestling” and “Best in Sprint” event respectively.

The Makati group, composed of Jeremiah Sablad, Nino Mark Lustria and Reinzy Colle, all fourth year students, and alternate third year high school student Nicky Amista, will leave on November 4 together with their coach Katherine Javier, a fourth year Physics teacher and adviser of the Makati Science‘s robotics club called Makati Science Innovative Minds and Genius Individual’s Network (MS IMAGINE).

According to Javier, their special robotics class currently has 13 members and still open to all third and fourth year students. She said members of the club are being taught to be analytical, develop their logical reasoning skills, patience and determination, and at the same time expand their knowledge in computer programming, mathematics, science and engineering. She further said the success of the school can be attributed to the all-out support of the Makati city government.

The Philippine Robotics Olympiad, now on its third year, is a science and technology event which aims to offer the country’s promising elementary and high school students an opportunity to expand their horizons through the exploration of robots and robotic systems in schools using the LEGO Education Set.

Furthermore, the competition aims to stimulate among students early design, engineering and computing skills which are highly relevant to progressive education. It is being sponsored by Felta Multimedia Incorporated and Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology.

Makati Science wins award at Robotics Olympiad

The Makati Science High School won the Best Presentation in the science fiction category for its “World of Imagine” entry in the 3rd World Robotics Olympiad (WRO) held recently in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Makati Science team, one of the five teams that represented the country in the WRO, made a futuristic sci-fi presentation creating an intergalactic city powered by batteries to make their robots move.

DepEd-Makati superintendent Elena Ruiz said the Makati Science team was composed of three fourth year high school students namely, Cyril Lumboy, Siegfrid Mendoza and Glenn Angelo Galano, and their coach, Kathy Javier.

Ruiz said the team bested 121 other national finalist teams that competed in the Olympiad, which came from the 12 participating countries that include Australia, Japan, China, Hongkong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Russian Federation, Thailand, Brunei, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, and the Philippines.

Ruiz said five teams, composed of six grade school and nine high school students, represented the Philippines in the WRO. Two of them were from public schools in Makati — Nemesio Isip Yabut Elementary School (elementary level, regular category) and Makati Science High School (high school level, open category).

The other finalists were La Salle Greenhills (elementary, regular category), First Asian Institute of Technology and Humanities (FAITH) and Aquinas High School (secondary level, regular category).

Makati girl wins Japan scholarship

Makati Science High School student Maria Mahonri Yggrazil Andaca has been awarded a full-year scholarship in Japan for school year 2006-2007.

Makati Mayor Jejomar C. Binay congratulated the 15-year-old Andaca for hurdling the rigorous evaluation and screening process of the Japan-ASEAN Scholarship program.

Andaca, who is scheduled to leave for Japan tomorrow, is among the long list of Makati students who have received an opportunity to study abroad as a scholar and represent the Philippines as ambassadors of goodwill.

The Japan-ASEAN Exchange Program conducts an annual search for high school students who can qualify as exchange student.

The program, which started in 1956 in the Philippines, aims to enhance the interaction of young generation Filipinos with young Japanese individuals.

The program aims to provide educational, cultural and historical learning experience for the participants.

Last year, third year Makati Science High School student Zipporah Clariz Duque also received a full scholarship from the government of Singapore. Duque was given an opportunity to study in Singapore for four years and was among those who passed the 2006 ASEAN Scholarship for Filipino youths.

Before Duque, Makati students Neil Bryan Alapide and Andrew Lachica were also granted the same scholarship. Two other Makati students were also given a chance to study in Japan in 2001. They were Alvin Altajeros, also of Makati Science High school, and Shamcey Supsup of Makati High School-Main.

Don Michael Acelar de Leon, also from Makati Science, and Adelfa Melegrito of Fort Bonifacio High School were granted a one-year scholarship to the United States under the Partners for Learning Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program for the US Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs last 2004 (Hannah L. Torregoza).

The other three outstanding campus journalists were Don Michael Acelar De Leon, Ateneo de Manila University communication student (2006); Ivy Mae Cleopaz Vitanzos, University of the Philippines (UP) medicine student (2002); and Anna-Marie San Marcelino Villa, University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman comparative literature graduate (2000).

Dalida will attend UP Diliman and will study psychology for his undergraduate degree.
